A review has been made of the more important studies on the transmission of earthquake vibrations through a horizontal layer of soil. On the other hand the survey of the effect of important shocks, and of the ground motion and response spectra in different soils and rocks ahs allowed us to draw conclusions about the effect of the ground at the site. Usually the damage in rock is small, and a resonance effect between the fundamental periods of the structure and ground motion might amplify the vibration. Duration decreases with the hardness of the soil and this might explain the usually small damage in rock.
