Thrity years of technical developments in hard, protective wear coatings of tools have led to significant improvements in global manufacturing productivity. Both CVD and PVD technologies have become indispensable to the manufacture of cutting and metalforming tools and market penetration of coated tools, particularly with PVD, will continue at a steady growth rate. The history of hard coatings integration on carbide tools illustrates the general pattern of development from single monolayer to multilayer designs with increased functionality for machining applications. The microstructure and compostion of the hard coatings must be tailored to meet the very demanding wear environment in metalcutting with current trends towards higher speed and dry machining. The latest significant developments in PVD hard coatings include multilayer high-temperature resistant cutting tool coatings and the combination of the same with lubricant coatings used for sliding wear cpmponents . Corresponding designs of commercial PVD coating systems capable of deposition such complex coatings will be described.
