The wear behavior of clad layers of hot rolling mill rollers operated at elevated temperature is affected by higher temperature and service loading. In addition, the formation of oxide layer and the cyclic thermal shock during continuous casting and milling process also play an important role. In this study, wear behavior of cobalt base alloys deposited by plasma-transferred arc welding (PTA) was studied. Pin-on-disk wear tests at elevated temperature were conducted under various conditions to evaluate the wear behavior of different alloys and to investigate the effect of oxidation on the wear behavior. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and thermal fatigue test were also carried out. Possible wear mechanisms were evaluated through the wear volumes and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis on the worn surface. Preliminary results revealed a consistent relationship between wear conditions and wear volume. The improvement of wear behavior by carbide addition at higher temperature was significant.
