This paper summarizes the results of recent studies by authors to examine the effects and benefits of application of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) in various configuration to improve power system stability. The performance of the SMES can be improved by integration of the SMES with Solid-state Phase Shifter. This combination can realize a power system controller with significant effectiveness less influenced by its location in power system. In addition, configuration of this controller is simplified and its control scheme to improve steady-state stability and transient stability has been proposed. This paper describes concepts of designing control scheme and the advantage of application of each configuration of the SMES to power system.
