Announcement of new world health organization guidlines on community noise

Health-based guideline values for preventing exposure of populations to noise have been first published by WHO in the series of Environmental Health Criteria (WHO, 1980). At a WHO Task Force Meeting in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1992, these guideline values were revised and it was agreed upon updated guidelines in consensus as discussed below (WHO, 1993; Berglund & Lindvall, 1995). In a meeting, convened in London, United Kingdom, 26-30 April 1999, the WHO Guidelines for Community Noise were revised and updated and made globally applicable. At this meeting, the issues of noise measurement, noise induced health effects and approaches to managing noise were addressed and consensus on the community noise guidelines was reached.
