Aerobic waste compound degradation in packed-bed reactors

Immobilized biocatalysts were applied in different packed bed reactors to investigate their use for application in degradation of volatile waste compounds. The materials for the immobilization were inorganic (e.g. silicates, slate, glasses) and organic (e.g. polyurethanes, other foams). The influences of surfactants, co-substrates etc. were also examined. The microorganisms applied were of a natural origin, selected and stabilized for stable and constant degradation. Mixed cultures as well as strains with a known potential for the degradation of the waste compounds (such as styrene, TCE, BTEX) were used. These strains or mixed cultures were characterized (e.g. physiological activities, stability), as necessary. The reaction systems were characterized from the technological (e.g. flux rates, steady states, stability, mean retention times, loading rates, number of model pollutants) as well as modelling point of view.
