Reactor for aerobic purification (aerobic treatment) of waste water is provided with means for introducing oxygen, with a settler for the sludge, with means for introducing waste water to be purified, and with means for discharging purified waste water. Said reactor is characterized in that it is provided with an aerobic reactor compartment which is provided with means for conveying the waste water upwards through the reactor compartment (riser) and with means for recirculating waste water from said compartment to a reactor compartment in which the waste water flows downwards (downcomer). The settler is disposed in the downcomer, and the outlet for purified waste water from the settler is at a lower level than the said means for recirculating the waste water from the first reactor compartment.
