The possibility of monitoring accumulation of defects in articles under fatigue loading by measuring the rate of ultrasonic propagation is considered. The shape of ultrasonic rate vs number of loading cycles dependence shows three stages, each of them corresponding with a decrease in ultrasonic propagation rate. The most dramatic decrease in ultrasonic propagation rate is observed prior to failure. Proposed is a method for treating articles by high-power electrical current pulses to increase their life time.
