Very energetic discharges are under investigation to achieve coherent and incoherent soft X-ray sources from a highly ionized carbon plasma. Energy as high as 60 J is stored in 36×2 nF knob capacitors mounted in parallel and discharges into a 1 mm diameter polyethylene capillary. Peak currents reach 50 kA with 42 ns rise time and 85 ns FWHM. Plasmas with CV-CVI line emission have been produced with a predominance of CVI Balmer a line. Results of experiments performed with different capillary length indicate an amplification of the Balmer-α line (18.2 nm) and Balmer-β line (13.5 nm), with a gain of 1.6 cm~(-1) and 2.1 cm~(-1) respectively.
