A COLLABORATIVE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT FOR INNOVATIVE MGP SITE CHARACTERIZATION A STATUS REPORT

A collaborative demonstration project seeks to improve former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) site remedial investigations by identifying tools and methods which enable more accurate, less costly, and faster site characterizations. Subsurface probes with direct sensors, geophysical technologies, and advanced data management are demonstrated. The host site was previously characterized by traditional means of test pits, test borings, monitoring wells, and laboratory analyses of samples. Characterization by innovative technologies will be compared to both characterization by the traditional approach and to the "site reality" determined through confirmation studies. The project, currently valued at $500,000, provides an example of leveraging public and private research dollars with minimal transaction costs. Project direction is provided by a consortium of project co-funders. A delineation of project tasks and responsibilities allows USEPA to participate in the project by providing services. Project participants include agencies (USEPA, NYSDEC, USGS), utility research organizations (EPRI, GRI, NYGAS), utilities (PSEG, NYSEG), participating vendors (ARA, DTI, Emrad, Fugro, Geonics, Geophex, Grumman, Hager-Richter, Handex), and supporting consultants (Ish Inc, META, Tetra Tech, Woodard and Curran). NYSEG is providing project management and the host site located in Binghamton, New York. Field demonstrations are complete and vendor reports are in various stages of technical review or complete. The confirmation study will be performed during the summer of 2000 and the final report is scheduled for completion by March, 2001.
