摘要

In recent years there have been major changes in the way safety is managed on a local, national and international level. This is reflected in the development of new standards such as the international standard for environmental management ISO14000 and the Australian standard for Risk Management AS4360. In 1995 the University of Melbourne commenced a systems approach to minimize risks in the workplace. This has lead to extensive auditing of safety management systems in a diverse range of academic and administrative departments. To support this activity the Risk Management Office has itself become ISO9002 accredited and environmental auditing commenced in 1998. This paper will discuss the inter-relationships of the new or revised standards. The activities and outcomes at the University of Melbourne will be used as an example. Statistical analysis of data will be used to illustrate the significant reduction in the severity of injuries in the workplace due to the introduction and maintenance of effective management safety systems.
