As our society has become increasingly litigious, every technical utility professional should anticipate that sooner or later his or her presence might be required to testify as a witness at a deposition, an administrative hearing, in arbitration, or at trial in a court of law. Therefore, it is wise to become as knowledgeable as possible and thoroughly understand how the litigation process really works and to keep some basic tips in mind so that one can be prepared to be an effective witness when called upon to testify. The first opportunity to give oral testimony as a witness in a public proceeding may be during a trial in a court of law, the subject of this paper.
