The lifetime of diamond tools is strongly dependant on the retention of the diamond grains in the metal matrix. When the metal matrix is cobalt, as used often, the only contribution to diamond retention is the residual compressive stress around the grains. In order to improve retention, chromium was added into the cobalt matrix.
