Due to the scheduled modernaization of Fraser Edmundstion's chip hadnling system, production was going to increase as well as the load to their ASB wastewater treatment plant. A trial was undertaken to determine if the addition of oxygen to the treatment system could handle this extra load. Oxygen was injected into one of two air-based treatment cells for a period of about 7 weeks. The results of the trial indicated that oxygen was very beneficial for this wastewater treatment system. The oxygenated cell was able to remove significantly more BOD than the non-oxygenated cell. Solids increased on this cell as well as the consumption of nutrient as a direct result of higher BOD removals. The sludge in this cell also settled better than the non-oxygneated cell. The addition of oxygen also reduced the amonunt of bioaugmentation products required during the trial. The biological population of this cell wa found to be healthier with respect to population and diversity than the non-oxygenated cell. It is recommended that permanent oxygen addition be ocnsidered should the mill increase loadings to their wastewater treatment plant.
