Shell Moranbah North - Australia's Newest Longwall Installation Post-Impressive Early Results

Moranbah North Coal is a recently developed underground, longwall mine. The mine produces high quality coking coal which is sold on the international market. The longwall is the production centre of the mine and the stringent procurement program followed reflected this importance The production requirements necessitate that the longwall extracts over 32 million tonnes of coal whilst fulfilling quality, technical and safety standards. Manufacturing monitoring of the longwall components included 'Fitness for Purpose', Compatibility and a Mini-Build. Final commissioning tests were completed once the longwall was installed. Production from the longwall is expected to increase from 4.2 million tonnes ROM coal in the first year to over 10 million tonnes ROM coal within the next five years. This will not be easily achieved. However, given the coal resource, the current mine infrastructure, the capacity of the installed longwall system and the attitude of all concerned at Moranbah North Coal, this goal is realistic.
