Plastic Processing Technology at University of Wisconsin-Platteville

Institutions of high learning are based on a long tradition of teaching which may or may not be responsive to the demands of industries. They are following a method of teaching by the ''book" which may not contain what is relevant or desired in today's fast growing technology In recent years, due to financial strain, the institutions of higher learning have found themselves at the mercy of changes and have taken a risk of participating in the new area of teaching, teaching not only the principles but also the application of this knowledge to increase efficiency and productivity. The class rooms have expanded to incorporate the production floor of a plant as part of class activities, and examples and homework deal with real production problems With that, a new partnership between industry and university emerges. One such program with a successful record in place is in the form of a partnership between the Society of Plastics Engineers-Milwaukee Section, a number of local and national industries, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The program, established less than 10 years ago, has placed a number of competent, productive graduates nationwide who have contributed greatly to the productivity of their respective industries since the early days of their employment This presentation describes this university-industry partnership and provides information about the program, curricula and the contribution of the Society of Plastic Engineers in this venture. The presentation provide the description of the program and direction of the partnership.
