Feasibility studies for the simultaneous monitoring of vinyl acetate (VA) and erucamide additive concentrations in poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) (EVA) copolymers were undertaken using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Two groups of samples, each group containing different erucamide concentrations for a fixed VA concentration, were used. NIR spectra of flowing molten polymers were obtained in-line using a flow cell attached to an extruder. The first derivatives of the NIR spectra in the region 1900-2000 nm show overlapping peaks of VA and erucamide. These peaks were deconvoluted using multivariate analysis methods.
