A sink mark prediction method using two commercially available software packages, C-Mold and Abaqus, is presented. Using Abaqus software, sink mark formation is simulated by a localized thermal and structural finite element analysis near a rib. Initial conditions and boundary conditions for the thermal and structural analyses were determined from a molding analysis using C-Mold. As the length of the analysis domain was increased, the sink mark profile predicted by a localized shrinkage analysis was found to approach the profile predicted by analyzing the complete cross-section of the plastic part.
