Photolytic ozonation (ozone/UV) is known to effectively destroy organic compounds which are known to be refractory to ozone. The mechanistic details, have also been demonstrated and documented. This poster presentation will focus on the evaluation of a pilot-scale small drinking water ozone/UV system to destroy one of the most frequently used oxygenates methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). The addition of oxygenates to gasoline to increase burning efficiency, enhance octane, and reduce atmospheric pollutant emissions is becoming more widely accepted. MTBE is a volatile organic compound (VOC) derived from natural gas that is added to gasoline in the United States to increase octane level and to reduce carbon monoxide and ozone levels in the air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified MTBE as a possible human carcinogen and set a drinking water advisory at 20-40 ppb.
