On May 2 1,1998 the United States’ first full scale microsand ballasted flocculation andclarification plant was brought on line at the North Table Mountain Water Treatment Plant(NTMWTP) in Golden,Colorado. This plant replaced a conventional coagulation,flocculation,and sedimentation plant.This paper presents 9 months of water quality data of water treated by the microsandflocculation/clarification process. These water quality data are compared to water qualityfrom the previous year when the water was treated in the conventional plant,To be notedis that these comparisons are strictly for the NTMWTP and may not reflect how amicrosand ballasted flocculation clarification plant would perform with other raw watersources. The water quality data parameters examined include turbidity,Total OrganicCarbon (TOC),Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM),Haloacetic Acids (HAAS),standardplate count (SPC),Microscopic Particulate Analysis (MPA),and microorganism logremoval. Microbial effects of recirculating microsand back into the system are alsoexamined.Operational aspects of a microsand ballasted flocculation/clarification plant are alsodiscussed,including chemical costs and power consumption costs as compared to theconventional plant,
