Microbially Induced Corrosion (MIC) is a significant cause of degradation of metallic materials in oil field water systems. Control of corrosive bacterial activities usually involves utilization of chemical biocides. Many of the misapplications of biocides occur because the characteristics of the biocides are not considered before use. This paper reviews the criteria for treatment method and selection of various biocides to make the oil field personnel, especially non-biologists, aware of the problems associated with the application of biocides even though the chemical selected has been reported by biologists to be effective against the organism or organisms in question. These general views, expressed with regard to the selection of biocides, are corroborated with the results from the corrosion laboratory assessment of biocides that can influence or retard corrosion of common metallic materials, such as carbon steel and stainless steel. This study employs electrochemical techniques for screening of biocides.
