To meet the specifications of ITER candidate conductors, the SULTAN Test Facility has been upgraded with a new superconducting transformer which allows ratings of the test samples up to 100kA under different cooling conditions. The transformer consists of two concentric layer-wound superconducting solenoids with the primary inside the secondary. The 100 kA secondary conductor is a rectangular cable-in-conduit type based on NbTi superconductor. The process that led to the selection of this conductor and some of the consequences of the choice for fabrication and operation are presented. The design principles of the transformer and the manufacturing techniques are discussed. Operational results carried out on an ITER prototype conductor are also presented.
