In the aerospace battery business, weight is allimportant. The current long-standing systems for onorbit power storage are nickel hydrogen and nickel cadmium, with nickel hydrogen being the current technology leader in on-orbit power storage. Lithiumion, because of its high specific energy, is new technology which holds great promise for aerospace applications. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the efforts being undertaken at Eagle Picher to optimize the weight of thermal and support structures, and then to use those improvements to compare the competing technologies.
