Improvement of performance and the continuously growing demand for environmentally beneficial products are the reasons for the successful use of magnesia-spinel bricks in the cement industry. The superior performance of magnesia-spinel bricks is shown in their behaviour towards mechanical and thermomechanical influences. They react with considerably higher thermal shock resistance than e.g. the direct bonded magnesis-chromite bricks, as they are called, or dolomite bricks. Refractory bricks are exposed to various stresses in the different kiln zones. One important criterion for the selection of the right brick is the behaviour towawrds the firing conditions in a rotary kiln. These depend in the first place on the kiln feed. The clinker firing conditions can be defined by the cement moduli which are lime standard, hydraulic modulus, silica ratio and alumina ratio. If certain limiting values are exceeded or not reached, firing conditions are likely to aggravate.
