Incorporation of a controlled-release glass into a calcium phosphate cement

In this study a controlled release phosphate glass in the system CaO-Na_2O-P_2O_5 is used for trying to make a calcium phosphate cement macroporous. A sieve fraction of this glass ranging between 105 and 400 mu m was incorporated in a calcium phosphate cement, where the powder contained alpha -Ca_3(PO_4)_2 ( alpha -TCP), CaHPO_4 (DCP) and precipitated hydroxyapatite (HA). The glass content of the cement was 10 wt percent. The setting times were determined with Gillmore needles. Soaking was carried out during 4 days, 2 and 5 weeks in Ringer's solution and 0.5percent CaCl_2 at 37deg C prior to determination of the compressive strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for microstructural analysis and X-ray diffraction to analyse the reaction.
