The effect of ageing in simulated body fluid (SBF) on the mechanical performance of Bioglass~circleR- and hydroxyapatite- (HA) reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites (Bioglass~circleR/HDPE and HAPEX~(TM), respectively) was studied. A weight increase of 6 to 9percent occurred for the Bioglass~circleR/HDPE composites after 6 months in SBF, but in contrast, the weight increase for HAPEX~(TM) was less than 1percent. As a result of the high reactivity of Bioglass~corcleR/HDPE composites, their tensile strength and Young's modulus decreased after 6 months in SBF, while the fracture strain increased. The reduction in the modulus of Bioglass~circleR/HDPE was less than 2percent for Vp=30percent, but 25percent for Vp=40percent, for which severe degradation of Bioglass~circleR particles was observed. in comparison, there was no decrease in the tensile strength, Young's modulus or fracture strain for HAPEX~(TM) samples.
