A method for determination of the dynamic characteristics of concretedams using combined field tests and numerical investigations

A method for comparing the results of field dynamical tests of concrete dams withresults obtained from numerical investigations is presented. The application of the method has beenillustrated by comparison of the results of the field dynamical tests of Pine Flat gravity dam (wintertest, 1971) with results of numerical investigations obtained by the author’s investigation programfor 3-D linear dynamic tests by taking into account the water influence in the reservoir. A graphicand an analytic solution are given which allow the fast determination of the dynamical characteristicsof the lacking in the field tests modes of vibration which may be very useful when carrying outfield dynamic investigations in future.
