In a pumping system, air valves are usually installed at the high points to prevent buckling of pipeline by reducing the magnitude of any negative pressure that may result from a pumping trip. However, improper selection of the air valves may lead to aggravation of pressure surges. A numerical study on the effects of an air valve on pressure surges during a pumping trip in a pumping station with air entrainment was carried out in this study.
