A peeling experiment was devised to characterize quantitatively the adhesion produced by silica particles between a hydrogel film and explanted animal tissues. In particular, the adhesion between the surface of resected porc livers and films of biocompatible hydrogels of polyethylene glycol was studied. The effects of contact time, pressure, surface wetting were investigated in ranges that are relevant for surgical practice. These results provide valuable guides to design adhesive patches, which chemistry, geometry and adhesive power are compatible with the stringent conditions encountered during human surgery.
