In the early fifties, metallization by thermal evaporation of aluminium brougth new brightness to the field of lighting reflectos and decorative parts inthe automotive, packaging, and household hardware industry. These rapidly growing markets increased pressure on productivity, quaoity, and cost, of course. This resulted in bigger and bigger vacuum chambers and thus, batch sizes. In car lighting reflector production, plasma polymerization of a corrosion protective layer and SiO_x evaporation for preventing haze formation by condensates were integrated into the vacuum process sequence. This technology now has reached a high level of maturity.
