As a fundamental study of applying surface modification treatments to machine elements under oil lubrication,Ni-P plated case-hardened steel rollers were fatigue-tested under pure rolling and sliding-rolling contact conditions.Rolling contact fatigue and surface failure mode were elucidated.In case of non-coated rollers the rolling ocntact fatigue stength under the pure rolling ocntact ocnidtion was hiher than that under the sliding-rolling contact condition.On the other hand in cse of Ni-P plated rollers,the fatigue strength under the pure rolling ocntact condition was almost equal to that under the sliding-rolling contact condition.The failure mode of all rollers was spalling caused by subsurface cracking.The fatigue strength of Ni-P plated roller was greater than that of the non-coated roller and hte friction coefficient of Ni-P plated rollers was smaller than that of non-coated rollers.
