In order to meet the ongoing demand for increased service performance from large steel back up rolls, investigations have been carried out to determine the effects of compositional variables on hardenability, wear resistance and toughness. At the smae time, a computer-based Finite Element (FE) methodology has been developed to predict the temperature and residual stress profiles associated withthe differential hardening process used to heat treat back up rolls. This should permit optimisation of the hardening time/temperature parameters aimed at achieving higher hardness and increased depth of hardening whilst maintaining internal residual stresses at safe levels. These developments have improved back up roll performance and also contributed to the development of a new type of back up roll.
