Based on the data presented here the variation caused by the realisation of the sound field is of the same order of magnitude as the variation caused by the different test subjects. Especially for plugs, where the standard deviations are great, even clear differences in the mean attenuation values will turn out to be non- significant and therefore the specific realisation of the sound field may be of minor importance. The lack of subjects fitting experience leads to less attenuation for plugs (figure 3) but almost the same attenuation for muffs. A comparison test coordinated by BIA, Sankt Augustin, Germany, between European test laboratories was finalised at the end of 1997. The results are presented elsewhere. Hence, much information is available for the ongoing revision of the ISO 4869-1 standard.
