The relationship among failure analysis, property prediction and structure design is concisely discussed. To illustrate the methodology for material design against fracture, this paper presents three material designs against three types of failure using three different approaches: (1) Design of nickel free austenitic stainless steels against creep rupture in elevated temperature service above 650 deg C using a metallurgical approach;
