The algorithms developed for estimating primary production in Case 2 waters has been validated empirically. It enables a number of photosyntetic and environmental characteristics of lakes to be estimated from surface irradiance, surface chlorophyll and surface temperature-three variables determinable by remote sensing. The objective of the present study was to extend existing marine photosynthesis models to lakes and to use them in algorithm for estimating primary production andto analyse the different criteria for dtermination of the euphotic zone. To archive these objectives a sufficiently large set of empirical data and had to be collected and evaluated, after which the appropriate semi-empirical modelling was performed.
