A Study on North-West Africa Coastal Upwelling Area Satellite Data, Modelling and Data Assimilation

A study is carried out on North-West African window around Cap-Blanc(Mauritania), characterised by a permanent upwelling phenomenon, combining three component: remote sensed sea surface temperature derived from AVHRR-NOAA GAC data, simulations by a 3D nested grid, primitive equations ocean model, and a data assimilation procedure combining SST data and the hydrodynamic model. The upwelling phenomenon is located by the remote sensed data. It si also very well reproduced by the model simulations, and the 4D-var (four dimensional variational) method for data assimilation. Model simulations and data assimiation procedure results in the upwelling area are shown. The three components contribution in the phenomenon studies are exposed.
