Internet-Based Geoinformation Systems for Information management in the Coastal Zone

In the past five years the WWW(World Wide Web) or the Internet has developed rapidly as a global information resource. Initialy a primarily static textual and graphical information resource, developments in both the hardware and software technology have now facilitated the interactive delivery of spatial information in a multimedia environment. In 1996, a project in the Centre for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science at the University of Aberdeen pioneeered the development of an Internet-based information system for the Forth Estuary Forum (FEF). Using a range of software tools, a simple pilot multimedia information system was developed, the FEF Pilot Information System. Provision of a simplenavigational interface offers access to a wide range ofinformation presented in the form of text and graphics. In 1997 through 1998, the FEF GeoInformation System went 'live', and whilst being updated, expanded, and enhanced, is currently in the second and third phases of development designed to offer the user-base a more dynamic form of information delivery, using the latest communicatins and networking technology and Internet map servers.
