The Junggar Basin in north--west part of China has an area of 13X10~4 km~2 and is rich in petroleum and natural gas. Up to now, several hundred million tons of heavy oil reserves have been found in shallow formations on the northwest margin of the basin. These is conventional heavy oil, extra heavy oil and super heavy oil in this area. During the past 10 years, the technology of heavy oil recovery has been developed rapidly and scale of production is increasing continuously. By the end of 1997, the total number of steam stimulation wells was 4,500 and the annual oil production was about 200X10~4 t. The recovery by steam stimulation is generally over 20percent, including some early production blocks where recovery has reached 26percent.
