The heavy and extra heavy oil area assigned to Corpoven in eastern Venezuela has been producing oil for the last thirty years trough the conventional methods of vertical and deviated wells, and sucker rod pumping units. The production rates obtained by this system varies between 100-500 bpd, in cold production, and peaks up to 1, 200 bpd with cyclic steam stimulation. Starting in 1993 with the application of horizontal drilling and electrosumersible pumps (ESP's), individual rates obtained per well have increased over 1,500 bpd in cold production, so this type of technology has been adopted for the development of the Orinoco heavy Oil Belt.
