Within the past two years, the number of mercury spills has greatly increased. As a conseuence, the environmental and public exposure levels to mercury vapors have also increased. The size of mercury spills has not only affected communities and residential homes but in major incidents, has also forced business establishments and schools in cities and towns to close down during cleanup operations. Improper cleanup methods have resulted in double exposure for the environment and the workers. Improper use of equipment during major mercury spill cleanups has led to the spread of mercury contamination and to prolonged cleanup actions. This paper discusses the proper methods and equipment to use, as well as the importance of ensuring that proper steps are taken during mercury spill cleanups.
