Oxidative activity of iron-binding chelators produce by wood-rot fungi

The posssible role of low-molecular weight compounds, auch as siderophores(iron-binding chelators), in fungal wood decay has been proposed. Many of these compounds can catalyzes redox reactions. Grwoing several wood-rotting fungi in solid medium we detected the presence of siderophores with CAS assay. The phenoloxidase activity (PO) was also detected in the lquid extracts of some these fungi. These extracts were liquid extracts ofs ome these fungi. These extracts were separated into high and low molecular witht fractions by ultrafiltration (UF) to determine if the PO activity was produced by typical ligninolytic enzymes or by low-molecular weight compounds. after UF (using 10-and 3 kDa cutoff membranes) the PO activity was detected in the filtrates of Trametes veriscolor and Poria medula-panis. This suggestd that the PO activity was caused by the presence of low-molecular weight compounds in the extracts of these fungi..
