Manufacturing Technology Program for Li-ion Batteries

The U.S. Army uses many different sizes and types of batteries for communication devices. Until recently, most of these batteries were primary batteries. Based on a need to reduce costs, the Army adopted a policy of using secondary batteries during training exercises. Several secondary battery chemistries could be used as replacements for existing primary batteries. However, Li-ion batteries promise to deliver higher specific energy and higher energy density over a wider temperature range than any other secondary battery chemistry. For these reasons, the Army's Communication and Electronics Command (CECOM) funded a Manufacturing Technology program at Yardney Technical Products, Inc. (YTP). This program had two objectives: to develop Li-ion cells capable of meeting the Army's requirements and also setup a flexible production line capable of producing as little as 100 batteries per year and as much as 3000 batteries per year of any one type. The production goal for all battery types is 7000 batteries or 56,000 cells annually.YTP has completed the line and produced cells for cell testing and Qualification Batteries. This paper summarizes the performance of cells developed under this program and describes the production line.
