An electrolyte based on a porous polymer matrix filled and swollen by a liquid was developed and studied. This electrolyte, prepared by the phase inversion process, presents a high equivalent conductivity. Complete lithium ion batteries using this electrolyte were manufactured and tested. Preliminary cycling results show a good rate capability and a capacity evolution similar to that of regular lithium ion cells. The same electrode materials and electrolyte compositions can be used to make these polymer cells. The interest of this technology also concerns the possibility of designing and manufacturing new battery shapes at lower cost.
