A team of world-class scientists and engineers have reduced to practice solid state rechargeable lithium metal polymer batteries for electric vehicles and other larger battery applications. This concept, first described by Dr. Michel Armand in 1978 and reduced to practice through the work of Dr. Michel Gauthier of Hydro-Quebec (HQ) is now being demonstrated in functional battery modules, and soon in battery packs. After years of technical breakthroughs by Hydro-Quebec, a team was assembled in late 1993 to go about the task of turning this promising advanced battery idea into a working, manufacturable, and affordable battery technology. HQ joined with 3M to bring together the chemistry, process, and manufacturing technologies needed to complete this task. With the further help of Argonne National Laboratories, a third research partner, this team set out to bridge the wide chasm between a promising lab chemistry and a practical battery system.
