Gearbox Damage at Leipzing North District Heating Power Station The Incident and Preventive Measures

In November 1994 a severe gear box damage happened at Leipzing power station. The cause of the damage was a spontaneous crack, originating from a forging defect close to the centerline of the gear wheel shaft. This paper discusses the main influencing parameters causing the spontaneous crack and focuses onto the measures drawn from the investigations performed.
