In July,1996,Florida Water Services Corporation (formerly Southern States Utilities,Inc.)completed the expansion of its existing 4.0 million gallon per day (MGD) brackish water reverse osmosis water treatment plant (ROWTP) by adding an additional 1.0 MGD of permeate capacity.Originally,a total of 4-1 MGD process trains were installed in 1992.The facility expansion was designed to provide treatment for a highly variable brackish feed water,approximating between 7,500 mg/L and 10,500 mg/L total dissolved solids (TDS).issues related to a variable and deteriorating water supply required innovative approaches,such as the use of an interstage turbine for energy recovery and increased second stage permeate production while maintianing permeate quality and water flux.THis is the first known use of an interstage turbine in a brackish water RO application.Based on the results of the expansion,the use of interstage turbiens has bene extended to the original 4 process trains.This paper presents the preliminary results of retrofitting the original four trains with an interstage turbien for energy recovery and enhanced water porduction.
