Aseismic evaluation of steep geogrid-reinforced embankments

Large scale dynamic centrifuge modeling was run to evaluate the aseismic performance of steep geogrid-reinforced embankments with three different facing structures including: i) gabions filled with sand, ii) flexible slope facing made with papersand iii) cemented soil. It was found that: 1) the dynamic response of the embankments and their aseismic performance can be evaluated based on the response accelerations and the mobilized tensile strength of geogrids; 2) geogrid-reinforced embankmentswith a steep grade of 0.3 in 1 have high capacity against shear failure; and 3) a safety factor of 1.2 times as large as that adopted in static conditions is appropriate for aseismic design. Methods and related test techniques based on centrifugemodeling, which were developed in the present study, were confirmed to be effective for the purpose of reproducing the deformation behavior of the embankments in shaking and further evaluating their aseismic performance.
