In this study, a number of centrifuge model tests have been conducted to investigate the three-dimensional behaviour of soila dn the retaining structure during an excavation. For this purpose, a quadrant of an excavation was simulated. Model retaining walls with different thickness were used to gain an understanding of the effect of the wall in a three-dimensional excavation. An in-flight excavator, able to perform three-dimensional excavation i na 100-G acceleration field, was develooped for this work. The test resutls show that the in-fight excavation method could model the development of lateral earth pressure initially and during the excavation as well. Corner restraint effects were significant in a three-dimensional excavation with unstrutted retaining wall. The results also show that increasing the thickness of a retainign wall can effectively reduce the wall and ground movement in a three-dimensional excavation with an unstrutted retaining wall.
