A reliable and low-cost miniature cryocooler for cooling infrared detectors, superconducting devices and other cryoelectronic instruments is a very challenging research topic in the cryogenic engineering field. Among different cryocoolers, a miniature, Joule-Thompson cryocooler with special mixtures is now a possible candidate for the mentioned applications due to recent developments. In this paper, the performance of a miniature mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thompson cryocooler operatiing around 80K and working at supply pressures of 1.0MPa to 2.5MPa has been studied experimentaly. Our experimental results show that our mixed-refrigerant Joule-Thompson cooler can achieve 80K within the normal working pressure of R22 compressors and even down to the normal working pressure of R12 compressors. Thus, a 80K Joule-Thompson cryocooler driven by a R12 compressor with lower weight, smaller size and lower input electrical power can possibly be developed for cooling infrared detectors in the near future.
