In the recent years, the application of electromechanical damping system to the vibration suppression of flexible structures has been given enormous attention. This paper aims at presenting the effectiveness of the passive/active hybrid type of electromechanical damping system using piezoelectric materials for vibration suppression of flexible structures. Design parameters of passive/active hybrid type of electromechanical damping system are optimized to minimize the peak value of the transfer function. In the numerical example, a cantilever beam example will be shown for the purpose of discussion. The results indicate that the passive/active hybrid type of electromechanical damping system is effective under trade-off condition between vibration suppression performance and control energy consumption.
